They wined and dined us

After 2 years and 2 months, the place where I'm temporarily working was finally opened up again for people to return to work in person.  People did have the option of continuing to work at home if their supervisors approved it but it was strongly encouraged to at least work a hybrid type schedule with a few days in the office and a few days at home.  Since I've only been working there since last June and since the nature of my job involves having to be physically there in the building, this was a nonissue for me about returning to the office since I always worked in person since I started there.

To encourage employees to come back in, management offered a week of special events and food.  Everything was opened to everyone, regardless if you were returning back to the office or had been working in the office all along.  Here is the schedule of events for the week.  And I don't work for Amazon though I thought the smiley here looked a lot like the smile on the Amazon logo.

These are the items that were in the goodie bag in addition to the free samples we got from the Don Francisco coffee truck that was there on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings.  We also got to enter into a raffle for winning a big basket of coffee (hope I win!)

Every morning there was breakfast in the cafeteria.  It was muffins, donuts, granola bars, and fruit. Not the most healthiest of breakfasts but I still got something sweet every morning.  To heck with the diet this week.  My mom said to never pass up free food :)

On Monday lunch was provided with a grab and go concept.  There were sandwiches, salads, some foods you could heat up like salmon and rice, macaroni and cheese, and cookies. Lots of cookies.  Also lots of food.  I think they were anticipating a bigger crowd.  They encouraged people to come back and take some food home with them.  I grabbed a couple of salads to bring home.

Here is my lunch from Monday:  (Actually the sandwiches was my lunch; I had one cookie and brought the rest home to hubby.  The sandwiches were so big that I had one for lunch on Monday and the other one for lunch on Tuesday).

Wednesday they brought in a food truck.  It was an old fire truck converted to a food truck.  The name of the company was Fire Up Freedom.

On the menu were cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches.  Best cheeseburger I have had in a bit!

On Thursday they listed an event happening at 4 p.m. that was called "Thirsty Thursday."  I wasn't sure what it would be.  I was wondering if it would be like ice cream sodas or something like that.  Someone at work said it was going to be beer and wine.  I went to the cafeteria to check it out and sure enough it was beer and wine, as well as soft drinks.  I didn't drink since I work until 4:30 (lol) and also I don't drink and drive.  But they had beer on tap, some wine and some drinks like margaritas in a can.  Each person who wanted to participate got 2 tickets; each ticket representing one drink.  That was the limit  you could have (2 drinks).  Those in charge of dispensing the drinks also stamped the person's hand when giving them the drink so no one would get more than 2 drinks.

We no longer have to get health checked when we report to work (previously had to have our temperatures taken, answer questions if we were sick or exposed to someone with Covid, etc and then got a printed badge with our picture on it stating we had passed the health check for the day).

Honestly, I didn't see too many new to me people in the office so I think a lot of people are still trying to work from home if at all possible.  Wednesday was the only day it was super busy there and that is because one of the departments had a face to face meeting so all employees had to come in.

So not much change except we did get wined and dined this week.  That was fun (and fattening).

Have a great weekend!

  1. Very generous welcome! "wined and dined" as in the title of your post.
Your Mom was right - never ignore free food.

    1. I do have to be careful with free food if it is not stored properly, lol. They were offering free pizza after a meeting one time which I did grab a piece of but it was still out 4 hours later (not stored in a fridge) so I would not have taken a piece then. So true about the generous welcome.

  2. Wow, what a fun week with all that going on. Too bad more people didn't show up to take advantage of it. I always thought that working from home would be nice but now that I live alone, I like going to work to have other people to talk to.

    1. It is nice to talk with others at work. I was surprised more people didn't come in to participate especially with all the food being offered. Everything was prepackaged with the food given out on Monday which I think were things that the grocery store would offer. Their prices listed on them were like $6.99 for the salads and similar for the sandwiches. That was a good benefit to get all those free lunches. I didn't have to bring a lunch until Friday from home which was a nice savings!

  3. Wow! That was quite a Welcome Back! I’m always shocked by businesses that offer alcohol during the work day. It seems like a west coast thing because it never happens around here. The cream stick looked really yummy! I would have definitely taken food home.my husband often brings bakery goods home from the office when he’s been to meetings. He says it just gets thrown away, otherwise. It’s a treat for us, since I quit making and buying stuff like that now that there’s just three of us. The converted fire truck is amazing!

    1. This was the first time I have heard of alcohol being served in a workplace during a work day. But the temp I work with said the insurance office she worked at previously had a happy hour of sorts and vowed never to do it again because the employees got smashed and there were loud boisterous things going on and inappropriate conversations (she didn't elaborate what those were). This place at least limited 2 drinks and they weren't big size cups of beer being poured etc. I was glad to get out of there though while people were still "partying" just in case :) It is always a nice treat if baked goods come home. I agree with your husband to bring it home because you are right, it usually does get thrown away. I hate to see food get thrown away, lol :)

  4. What a FUN-FUN-FUN thing for your employer to do, to encourage folks to get back to work in-person. As my mom always used to say... "It's better than a kick in the pants!" They could have ordered folks back to work and not compromised on it and not offered any free food or activities. I commend them for caring! And I'm glad you got to partake, Betty.... and indirectly your husband too. :-) ~Andrea xoxo

    1. I wonder too how many employees they would have lost if they ordered people back in . Some were resolute that they were not going to come in if forced. It was a nice gesture though with all the activities and food. And delicious too. I am sad the week is over with the freebies but I did gain a pound from all the food so it will be nice to get back to normal (whatever that is these days).

  5. What a nice work week for you. Sounds like your company is handling the return to the office situation well. Not everyone wants to return but I think a mix of home/office sounds fair. Like you, I've been working through it all along. When the pandemic was at its highest infection rates, I started my day at home and went in a bit later when the doctors were out of the office and seeing patients. I prefer working in the office.
    Have a great Saturday Betty.

    1. I have found I am enjoying working among people. It is a nice change. I think the office did plan it out well for bringing back people. The plans have been in the works for the past 2 months. They had a timeline of how it would happen with meetings, etc. One thing I forgot to mention in my post was that they lifted the vaccine requirements effective in March. It was required back in August that everyone be vaccinated. They took that away in March and now unvaccinated can come back into the building. I have mixed feelings about that. However, my supervisor "rode it out" and didn't get vaccinated, was able to work from home this whole time, and now can come back in (she has yet to come in but once). Just continues to be strange times at times. You too have a great Saturday, Lori!

  6. Wow, that's the way to encourage employees to come in! It should be interesting to see how many have gotten accustomed to working just from home for over the past two years and are reluctant to come back. Personally, I like getting out of the house.
And that fire-truck-turned-food-truck! Great idea. I'd like to see the inside "kitchen".

    1. I think a lot are reluctant to come back in. I haven't seen any employees in the call center (they have their own little "room"). I have found I enjoy getting out of the house and I worked at home for 30 plus years! It is nice to be around other people and have conversations with them. There is a fitness center too where I work but us temps aren't allowed to use it. We are considered a liability though everyone has to sign a waiver to use it. It doesn't bother me since I have a treadmill here at home but the other temp was bummed because she was hoping to use it. I too would like to see the inside kitchen of that food truck! It was really a clever idea.

  7. WOW what a post. Now that is something that can be appreciated. And since I knwo a little about food trucks, THAT is a FOD Truck. What a time of reunion. I know it is nice to start getting back to normal...... This is FUN and happy read.,.. ;-)

    1. Thanks Jack! It was a fun and happy week! That food truck with the fire truck was impressive! Great concept. We were trying to figure out how much it cost to buy an old fire truck and then refurbish it for a good truck. I hope it gets a lot of business. The food really was good!

  9. Wow, Betty. I'm so impressed by your employer's gestures of appreciation. Beats lame Secretary's Day floral arrangements any day of the week! That fire truck looks so cool; I'm going to check out the link. Oh BTW, I finally got around to checking out the yogurt you wrote about. Two thumbs up for the toasted coconut/vanilla, meh on the Key Lime ... I'm still looking for that salted caramel!

That fire truck was cool! And the people working it were so kind. Really pleasant experience. Honestly, I was amazed at all the goodies from the week! I'm sad it is over with!

  10. With the price of gas, it’s no wonder a lot of people still wish to work from home! My workplace is not that far from where I live, but over the course of a week it really adds up (and I don't normally run errands or go out for lunch either).
Once a month, we have an hour long staff meeting. On that day they always buy our lunch ~ even if it's pizza and salad (which it is most of the time), it's a nice gesture.

    1. That is so true about the price of gas! I think also people just got into a routine of working from home and it works for them so why change it? That is nice about your monthly staff meetings that include food. One of the departments where I work every few months will bring in lunch for their employees. It is usually pizza or salad. Its a nice gesture though!

  11. Could this be the start of returning to normal? I can totally see employers wanting staff to return to work and I can see employees not wanting to. As more and more employers do this, it will get interesting.

    1. I think it is the start of returning to normal. I also heard that 76% of companies want their employees to return to the office and 76% of employees didn't want to return. I think, personally my own opinion, companies waited too long to bring back their people. They should have encouraged hybrid situations sooner. Where I work there are big open areas where no one has been in for months. They could have spread people out and kept them safe and had people work 2 days at home, 3 days in the office, etc. We'll see how many more come back in the weeks ahead.

  12. That is nice of them to give those incentives to come back to the office. I probably would have gained a pound or two that week! Plus, I woud have taken two cans of margarita home for later! Have a great rest of the weekend!

    1. That is so true about it being hard to change something that someone has bee doing for 2 years. People got comfortable being at home and liked it. It is going to be hard to entice them back. I think it will take more than a week's worth of goodies and free food!

  15. That does sound like fun. How nice that they did that. The menu sounded nice and I'm glad you got to enjoy it. I do know that people who have worked from home really don't want to go back into the office. Me on the other hand think that it would be nice to get back into an office. Being home can really put you into a state of depression and being lazy.

  18. The company you work for sure knows how to treat its employees right! I've never heard of a week of events! It would be hard to say no to all that food.
Two of my sons were working from home, one full time, and one part time since the mandates began, and they both enjoy the option. One only has to go back to the office a few days a month. I don't think that's going to change, and to be honest, here in BC, Canada, our 'normal' life won't last. There are already rumours of returning mandates, etc.. it's really sad.

    1. I did gain a pound over the week with all the food. I didn't say "no" to a lot of it, lol. I figured it was a one time thing so might as well enjoy it! I do hope Canada doesn't put on mandates again. I think Covid is just something we all are going to have to live with and take our own precautions against getting sick.

  22. I'm sorry to be snarky but it amazes me that a company that has been closed for over two years over "health concerns" woos its employees back with danishes, donuts, cookies, burgers, fries, et cetera, then "treats" them to alcoholic drinks on site when they obviously are going to be driving home. It's just so ridiculous. And why not just come back to work when you're told to? Maybe someone else would like to have the job of those not willing to do what their employer asks. We have become a nation of hypocritical wusses. Not you, Betty! I don't mean you. I know you have been there and that you eat sensibly. You are in a weird situation though. xoxo

    1. I have to agree with you, Jenny. And I just read an article this evening that Elon Musk is ordering his people back to work in offices and not remote offices but among other colleagues, etc. I found it interesting too that the "bigwigs" didn't come in for the week. I thought they would have been there daily to have a visible presence but I didn't see the few I knew to be "bigwigs" there at all. I have wondered if the CEO of this company has ties somehow with our president as it seemed that this company was always the forerunner to do whatever was recommended/mandated to do. Mandatory vaccines for those working in the corporate office came a few weeks before anyone else really picked up on it and the day of our president's State of the Union address was the day we suddenly didn't have to wear masks anymore in the office. I like the work I do and the people I work with and the compute is nice so those are plus signs though there are negative ones there too :)
