The cocktail hour

Prior to this week when the beastly hot summer temperatures arrived, we had a routine that my husband and I did daily on the days I worked.  I would get home from work, greet him and Winslow, change out of my work clothes and then make a "cocktail" (water and lemon juice).  My husband would make his "cocktail" (water and lime juice) and we would take our "cocktails" out to the back patio where we would sit and enjoy them while we talked about our days, the weather, the news, world's problems (that we solved each and every one of them) while Winslow either laid by our feet or explored his backyard or would play fetch with me.  We would spend about 45 minutes out there (so I guess technically it wasn't a cocktail hour) and then would come inside and start making dinner.  After dinner we often went outside for another 30 minutes or so in order for Winslow to enjoy more fetch time and more sitting outside guarding his backyard.  Now that it is so hot, the afternoon "cocktail" hours we no longer do but do go out once the sun goes down for maybe 15 minutes so Winslow can play fetch if he so desires.  He will catch the squeaky toy or a ball for a few times and then he usually just sits and pants.  When he has had enough of the outside, he goes to the door and we let him and ourselves in.  I'm going to miss these afternoon "cocktail" hours but in the blink of an eye it will be September and a bit cooler temps and we'll resume them again.

It is hard to believe but I have been at this present temporary assignment for one year.  I started June 7, 2021.  Time flies when one is having fun.

This is our neighborhood pool.

Actually, I guess it is really 2 pools.

The pool is called the David Uribe Memorial Pool.

We have visited this park many a time and I always wondered who David Uribe was.  Out of curiosity one day I googled David Uribe and found out that he was a Phoenix policeman who had lost his life in a traffic stop back in 2005 just a few blocks away from where the pool is located.  When he approached the car for the traffic stop, he was shot and later succumbed.  Nice way to honor him by naming the pool for his service to our community.

The City of Phoenix has 29 public swimming pools.  All of them were closed in the summer of 2020 due to the pandemic.  A few swimming pools reopened for the summer of 2021, this pool being one that was not opened.  There were complicated rules and regulations for swimming.  So many allowed in the pool, reservations having to be made, and the like.   This year I was hoping that this pool would be reopened, but alas, a few months ago I read an article that only 14 of the 29 pools would be opened.  And not because of the pandemic.  But because they couldn't find lifeguards to man all of them.  The city was offering incentives and training for those who wanted to be lifeguards and bonuses but not many takers.  So they could only staff 14 pools, and sadly, this pool was not one of them.  I had read, but I have not found any further info about it, that they were going to offer shuttle services from a closed pool to an open pool, but I haven't found anything to substantiate that that is what is  being done.

At this same park where the pool is, every morning but Sunday, there is a group of men who drill together with exercises.  They always plant the flag there.  This group was only four men; I've seen it as high as eight men.  At the end of their time together, they always end with a prayer time.  (That is what our country needs more of, prayer).

And finally, one must always include a picture of the corgi if one is sharing pictures.

Have a great weekend! Stay hydrated and cool as you can if you are in a hot part of the country!

  1. I sure did enjoy reading about your after-work ritual with your husband & your "cocktails", Betty. And oh what a shame about that beautiful pool not opening. Lifeguards are in high demand here as well, for the beach. Many times the beach is technically "closed" to swimming because no lifeguard is on duty. It's been that way for a few years now. Many stores & fast food places are open for only limited days & hours because they can't find workers. I don't know where this is all leading. Try to keep cool, my friend. ~Andrea xoxo

    1. Weird, I commented a reply to your comment, Andrea, and it didn't take on my blog nor was it my spam comments on Blogger. Blogger sure has its messed up moments! I think I mentioned something about being amazed other parts of the country were having trouble finding lifeguards too. Maybe it is because the swimming season is such a short one but it used to be a good job for college students home for the summer. We are good about keeping cool here. Lots of indoor time and water!

  2. The cocktail hour sounds refreshing. Did you use actual lemon and limes or the bottled variety? I was on a kick a few years back, making different fruit waters, but I got out of the habit. We are having the same issues here with no lifeguards at community pools. It was always a college age type of job, so I don’t know if those kids no longer want that job or there are better paying ones? Interestingly enough, my Nextdoor App is filled with kids that age offering babysitting and landscaping services, so there are definitely ones looking to make money.

    1. We are lazy and use the bottled variety for the lime and lemon. It was a fun routine to do and I look forward to it returning. I thought a lot about the lifeguard situation and I came to the conclusion, for what it is worth, that the pandemic messed everything up (as it did with so many other things). When we lived in Billings, the public pool up there was staffed with college aged lifeguards. Pool always closed mid August when they went back to school. In the pandemic, with pools closed those college aged kids probably found other employment and then got away from being a lifeguard since the pools were closed for one year, limited opening the next. Now there must not be too much of an interest to be one. Of course standing outside watching a bunch of rowdy kids in a pool in 114 degree heat doesn't sound too appealing, lol. But they were giving away like $2000 bonuses! Our Nextdoor App also has kids looking for summer jobs here. Usually the younger ones who can't get hired on at fast food places and the like.

Sad about the pool. So much has changed since the start of the pandemic.
You saved the best for last with that adorable Corgi :)

    1. He knows he is adorable, lol :) It is sad about the pool because I know a lot of neighborhood kids would go to it. When I worked at home, I would see the kids walking up the street with towels wrapped around them. I knew they were headed to the pool. The closest one opened here is about 5 miles away.

  4. I hope you can keep cool. I saw on tv this morning you are to have temps in the triple digits. That is way to hot and a pool would be the perfect place to keep cool. People shortages are hitting everywhere. Even pools. No one can find enough help. Now is the perfect time for people to find employment.

    1. I do feel for the neighborhood kids who can't enjoy a dip in the pool on a hot day. Since we have our own pool and can have family over to swim, it is not an issue for us, but for so many some of the job of summer days has been taken away.

  6. Congrat's on your 1 year anniversary. Your cocktail hour sounds so nice. We've been enjoying the weather also but this coming week it is supposed to be very HOT. Our local pool was closed in 2020 but opened in 2021. I didn't go last year because the covid numbers here were too high for my comfort level and they were always packed when I went by. Apparently, they did not have any restrictions. A number of local places are struggling to hire workers. I tried to order a pizza the other day and they were not offering delivery. This is going to really hurt the businesses. It's scary to see where everything is headed.
Stay cool my friend and enjoy your weekend!!!

    1. It is scary to see where everything is headed. We stopped at McDonald's for breakfast this morning and they had a sign out that they didn't have carbonated drinks and if you were paying with cash you had to have exact change only. Wow about not being able to get a pizza delivered. I have to wonder too if that is some of the effect of the high gas prices. Becoming too expensive to offer such a service, even if they do tack a delivery fee on. Thankfully we have a pool so we can enjoy a dip now and then and son/family come over to swim, but I feel for the neighborhood kids who used to enjoy going for a dip on a summer day. Not much else you can do outside in the heat of Phoenix :) Thanks for the congratulations on my one year anniversary! I really enjoy the work. I would like it to be permanent but I think we'll always be temps in this particular position and that's okay. I would like the health benefits but in a few months I'll be eligible for Medicare so that will help a bit :) You stay cool too with your temps being hot! It is that time of year :) Have a great weekend too, Lori!

  7. Even the best maintained public pool is not a healthy place to swim in it.
The water and lemon juice 'hour' is a nice habit. Sometimes, especially in winter, I drink freshly squeezed , undiluted lemon juice to prevent a cold or a sore throat.
May your temporary work become a permanent one, if you like it!

    1. I do like my job. I do hope it becomes permanent but I don't see it happening. It is less expensive to keep a temp as they don't have to pay benefits for us like health insurance, etc. So true about public pools not being super healthy to swim in. Thankfully we do have our own pool but I know a lot of kids really looked forward to going to that pool as we would see how many kids were there before the pandemic. I hear lemon juice is also good for liver health!

  8. Nice cocktail hour tradition you have 😊. Congratulations on your one-year anniversary.
I know several services have had to scale back after being shut down for the pandemic, struggling to staff up again. Sad about the pool, but how nice to name it in honor of the police officer.
Thanks for taking us on this little tour of your area... and for a Winslow pic!

    1. Thanks Abby! I can't believe it was a year already! My husband said he heard a news report that it could take 2-4 years to get staffing back to what it might have been pre pandemic and then it still is not going to be like it was pre pandemic. I thought it was a nice honor to name the pool for that policeman. It was a horrendous crime to happen in the morning hours too. I like when the city/government names things in honor of people. We used to go to Rose Mofford Dog Park. She was a governor of Arizona for a few terms. We liked the dog park and Winslow liked the dog park but it was in a rough part of town with lots of homeless hanging around and then it is right now in the midst of where they are extending the metro light rail tracks so it is a mess to get there. And then of course we won't go when it is so hot out, lol :)

  9. Oh wow, aren't you glad y'all have your own swimming pool? Particularly now ... last night's national news even mentioned Phoenix's 110-113* temps! Now I'm wondering about your 'cocktail hour' -- I see you already answered about fresh or bottled juice; do you enjoy over ice or just straight up? Regardless, it sure sounds like a nice ritual. Hugs to adorbs Winslow!

    1. Yes, glad for the pool though the temp is 89 degrees in it. Grandson will enjoy the warmth of it tomorrow when he comes swimming. Last time they were over, 2 weeks ago, it was 82 degrees for the water and he shivered a bit :) Yesterday was 114 degrees here with today about the same. You remember those days :) Hubby drinks his cocktail over ice, I like it straight up, lol :)

  10. It does seem like lots of people have pools in Phoenix ~ and why not with your temperatures during the summer! We've had hotter than usual temp's for this early in June. 102 yesterday, probably the same today. Winston is probably happy to be inside! Such a cutie!

    1. We do have a pool. I would say about 1 in every 3 houses has a pool. You can always tell who has pools around you because hardly anyone maintains the pools themselves, lol, and has pool services so you see the pool services trucks in front of people's homes, lol. (We too have a pool service to maintain ours). Our temps have been somewhat "normal" for this time of year. It actually hit a week later than it has hit in other years so that was good. We'll suffer through this until the end part of August :)

  14. Yes, the heat of summer really changes things like sitting outside for cocktail time. Glad you get out a little later in the evening. It is very nice that the pool is dedicated to the police officer who lost his life. So sad that they can't open all of the pools. Why don't people want to work? Are they still getting government money? It makes me kinda angry. Even hospitals are short on help yet why would people not work after they have their degree in nursing? Hope you have had a nice weekend. Take care. Debby

    1. I don't know why people do not want to work. They aren't getting any benefits from the government like they did during the pandemic. I think people just shifted on what they did but still bills have to be paid so I don't understand why there is such a labor shortage. That is a shame that hospitals are short of workers! That is scary with healthcare! I hope your weekend went nicely too Debby and that Mark got back safe and sound.

  15. Those pools look so nice and relaxing. I think we have one or two? community pools around. The YMCA has an olympic sized pool, but unfortunately the glass roof fell in during hurricane Ida and filled the pool with glass. Repairs are ongoing and they still have not opened back up. You sound a lot like me -- every day I sit on my front porch for a few minutes when the weather is nice. The cats usually join me just like Winslow joins you! It is much too hot already so I won't be doing it for a few months either.

  18. Hubby and I have "cocktail" hour nightly as well. We're in a Martini phase at the moment. We were in a Manhattan phase for awhile, but with it being warmer, we switched to Martini's. He's Gin and I'm Vodka. We both have a lemon twist. My drink is actually a Lemon Drop Martini with more Lemon juice then just a twist, so perfect for the hotter months. Like you we went outside, on the back deck; until this hot spell...which probably won't last, so presumably we'll get to head outside again for cocktails. Our pools were open during Covid (we have 3 in this small community), but restricted with reservations needed and a cap on how many could attend, and how long they could stay. There was one way in and a different traffic pattern out, so folks didn't cross over each other. It seemed pretty well organized. Not sure what they're doing this year. It's been years since we've had a membership to the pool, since our daughter was young. Exercising in this heat...hope the men are being careful with their hydration.

    1. I do like your and your hubby's cocktails! It was nice to hear your pools were open during Covid. I think of all the upkeep on them with adding water, chemicals and the like and for them to sit empty. Kind of sad though I understand it. People are really good about hydrating here with the heat. It is the visitor who ends up in trouble not keeping hydrated and being out and about in the extremes. The "natives" are sort of used to it if one can get use to brutal heat like this :)

  19. Congratulations on your 1-year anniversary at your job! Will it become permanent at some point? Too bad about your pools. Seems all businesses either have an employee or supply problem or both! One has to wonder where it will end if ever? Rich and I usually sit out on our deck in the evening as the sun is setting. 20. One year at a job you enjoy--time to celebrate! Isn't it strange how there are so many job openings and few workers now? It's the same thing here. It looks like you are in the middle of summer, and what a beautiful place to live. Our June has been quite cool and wet. Wetter than usual. We're still waiting for summer to hit. The river is rising, though, and, although it won't be breaking any records (phew), it is already higher than last year with about two weeks to go before it begins to recede.

    2. If you don't already follow Running 4 Heroes, Inc. on Facebook, you might like that one. It's sad but sweet. Have you read about the deputy killed in Spartanburg, SC recently? He was only 25 and they'd found out two days before he was shot that his wife was pregnant. It's heartbreaking.

    3. I looked it up on Facebook and started following it. I have seen here where people will run for a fallen officer on the day the anniversary of the day they were killed. That is sad about the officer who was recently killed in SC. The poor wife! Up in the Prescott area where we used to live an officer just got shot/died Tuesday night I think. He was older, probably close to retirement. Seems to happen that way, doesn't it? Young officers with young children/pregnant wives or officers heading towards retirement. It makes me wonder why anyone would ever consider joining a police force.
