Desert

As many of you know, I live in Phoenix, which definitely qualifies as a desert.  It does get HOT here in the summer months and it can be brutal as I've written about in the past.

But one thing we have discovered is a local coffee shop, Desert Eagle Coffee.  I wrote briefly about it before, but it is basically a drive through with tables outside for socializing if one wants to do that.

Desert Eagle is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including all holidays.  We went there this year on Thanksgiving and tried to go there on Christmas but the line was wrapped around the building and after waiting in line for about 10 minutes without really moving, we got out of the line and went back the next day.

Our favorite drink to get there is called a Mr. Penguin, as pictured below.  You can get it hot, iced or blended.  We get it blended.  We also get it with whipped cream and drizzle.  These only have chocolate drizzle. Sometimes it will be both with caramel and chocolate.   This is a medium size.  They have a great incentive program.  You buy 10 drinks (they keep track of it through your cell phone number) and then you get a free drink!

They are delicious! We splurge on them about once a month during the hot summer months and maybe every 2-3 months during winter.  They are worth every calorie in them!

Are you a coffee drinker? Do you like blended drinks like these?

  1. I'm actually not a coffee drinker, but those do look delicious! My drink splurge would probably be a Wendie's Chocolate Frosty, and I try to get one at least once a month.

    1. Thanks for visiting! I love Wendy's Frosties! When my kids were growing up and I would take them and their friends to Wendy's for dinner, they always got a frosty that they would dip their fries into! So delicious! That definitely is a great treat to have :)

  4. I drink lattes and I’m sure I would LOVE one of those. I’ve really had to cut back on sugar, so I don’t do iced Frappuccino drinks anymore, but I think you could twist my arm once!

  7. I'm a coffee addict! Two cups-full each morning; more often than not I brew a third to sip cold in the late afternoon. Your Mr. Penguins look delish, Betty! It looks like something we used to get at The Hurricane -- a Florida beach bar: Coffee, ice cream, vodka and Kahlua + whipped cream.

PS - I love the convenience of their hours, but feel badly for employees who have to work on holidays. Still not sure how I feel about places that stay open on Christmas.

    1. We have yet to go to Buzzed, the ice cream store with alcoholic beverages for those who want one. I was waiting til it warmed up a bit, but will go soon. That drink you described from the Florida bar sounds yummy too! I heard some people actually like working the holidays, especially in food service. People are generous tippers then it seems!

  12. YOWZA! That's my kind of place ... like Bert's Market in Folly Beach, they may doze but they never close! I love coffee but I do not get sugary drinks but I can tell that a Mr. Penguin WOULD be worth every calorie. If I ever make it to Phoenix, you are going to have to take me there! xoxo

    1. I think I heard of Folly Beach from some one else's blog. I think it is in South Carolina? Yes, definitely we will get a Mr Penguin if you are ever in Phoenix but don't come in the summer months lol.

  13. I will have to find one of those the next time we go to Arizona. I do enjoy coffee but I don't always go out for coffee. Since we recently traveled and we like the McDonald's breakfast sandwich I had a few iced coffees. Yours look delicious.

    1. I think you will like it Debby. I like the McDonald's sausage egg mcmuffin. They used to be 2 for 4 dollars but I think went up to 2 for 4.50. We don't eat them very often due to their sodium content.

  14. This drink sounds delicious. I like these sorts of coffee drinks. Usually I get them at McDonalds because it's conveniently located across the street from where I live. And they come hot or cold which is nice when adapting to whatever the weather is like.

I visited Phoenix on vacation once and really liked the city. I hope to return some day.

  19. Yes, I certainly am a coffee drinker!

    Those look delicious!

There is a local coffee roaster where I live that I really like as well. Punch cards are pretty common here, with buy X, get one free. It used to be more like buy 5, get your 6th free but now it's more like buy 10, get your 11th.

I was in Phoenix over the winter and plan to return -- maybe I will give your penguin a try when I go again!

  20. Thanks for visiting my blog. I like when businesses have a reward system for loyal customers. Shame that your local coffee house upped how many items purchased before being rewarded, though. Glad you visited Phoenix in the winter lol. Do try the Mr. Penguin if ever here again. I believe you will enjoy it!

  22. Those do look good! I am not a big fan of all those flavored coffee drinks. I have my cup of Community coffee in the morning with two packs of splenda and a splash of half n half. That's it! I've tried a few and they were good, but I never got on board with all the fancy coffee drinks.

  23. I do not do coffee in any way, shape, or form. I hate the smell, I hate the taste! I would opt for a Sonic drink if I were already out or my usual go-to at home, a big ol' glass of Milo's sweetened tea! I've never really been "on" the desert, although I drove through Needles, California, when moving from LA to Missouri and it was 118 degrees. Also went out on the high desert to see the poppies one time, and it was FREEZING cold and windy, and the poppies curled their little faces up and huddled close to the ground, so I saw basically nothing!

    1. Hottest it ever got since we have lived here (6 years now) was 123 degrees! And the high desert can be cold too. Such an anomaly when one thinks of it :) I haven't had much sweetened tea. I like hot caffeine free tea in the "cold" winter months :)
